Operation Bayou Justice
I had a death grip on the edge of my seat as the airboat zipped along the surface of the water, mashing down swamp grass, skidding one way, then the other, its giant propeller roaring behind us. I swear he had the pedal all the way down, just for the hell of it.
Earl was in the driver’s seat, the idiot Dalton and I had been assigned to babysit. Those weren’t exactly the words our boss had used, but that’s what we were doing just the same. Earl had managed to get himself arrested for possession and attempting to sell some protected turtles. Instead of fitting him with an ankle-bracelet, our boss got wind of the situation, rushed in to cut a plea deal with the guy, and put us undercover on twenty-four hour surveillance, hoping he’d lead us to his buyer—a man that, Earl had claimed, was a “big fish.”
I wasn’t sure Earl could find his way out of a paper bag. If he did, he’d slither out. With his greasy hair and muscled arms, he was exactly the kind of guy who made some women swoon—the ones who like those bad-boy types with the cocky swagger. Whatever the appeal, it eluded me. His “charm” made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. The way he looked at me made me feel like he was either undressing me with his eyes or secretly grinning, believing that he had somehow pulled the wool over my eyes.
