Spring Break by Charlie N. Holmberg
Hands gripping the black rock, Mildred exhaled sharply, her breath fogging around her face the same way the clouds clung to the sheer mountainside. In another lifetime, she might have admired the view: the tree sprouting from the craggy out-cropping up ahead, its limbs heavy with pink, roselike blossoms, the orange sun just tipping into the rolling clouds; the first shades of twilight creeping up the opposite horizon, as though afraid of being driven back again. But at that moment, all she could think of was how hard she’d hit if she fell, how quickly it would hurt her, and how much her manicure had cost. She’d already broken two nails climbing up this mountain. The one time in the past two years she did something for herself–a treat–and it was already broken, just like the rest of her.
Worth it, she told herself as she took another shaky step across the ledge. Her brownie guide had leaped across the mountain face with ease and now waited impatiently near the blossoming tree. At least, she thought that was the brownie. It might have been the tip of a dead yucca. Did yucca grow in Faerie? She couldn’t recall, and it wasn’t exactly something she could google, even if she weren’t clinging to the side of a mountain with all her might.
A little farther, Mildred, she urged, reaching for the next handhold and snapping off the ornament of another nail. The swirling markings of her mate tattoo poked out of her coat sleeve, curling around her knuckles. He’s here. You’ve almost reached him.
