"In book one in the Dragonsworn trilogy, McFarland crafts a complex mythology that underlies a world in which the fate of humans and dragons hangs in the balance. Fans of epic fantasy will enjoy McFarland's rich, well-developed storyline that's heavy on action and political intrigue. While the basis for the romance between human heroine Kai and dragon-shifter Rhys is compelling, external factors threaten their fledgling relationship and keep them from fully connecting, culminating in a cliffhanger ending -- for their love and the existence of dragon- and humankind." ~ Barbara Pizio, RT Book Reviews

Twenty-four-year-old Kai Monahan had a promising future, once. Then came the mistake. The fallout.

Now a law school dropout, Kai spends her days rock climbing, where the only life she can ruin is her own.

Until a handful of renegade dragons ruin it first.

Kidnapped to save her own life after accidentally witnessing—and helping in—a dragon battle high in the Rocky Mountains, Kai is thrown into a hidden world where magic is real, shifters live among us, and dragons transform into gorgeous men with the weight of the world on their shoulders and breath-stealing starfire blue eyes.

Trapped, hunted, and forced to lie low in a cave that hides the history of his once-great people, Rhys and the other dragon shifters swear they’ll get Kai home soon.

Then, the worst happens: a chance brush of skin against skin binds Rhys to Kai. Only him. Agonizing fire tears through his body when she’s not near. Unless Kai completes the bond, Rhys will lose himself.

Haunted by the fate of his father, all Rhys wants is a mate who chooses him of her own free will; but all Kai wants is to be free. If she knew his fate, she’d bond with him out of pity. Rhys would rather die.

If only he wasn’t so much more important to the fate of the world than Kai can possibly guess.

Look Inside Ch. 1

Kai stood at the brink of the precipice, the toes of her worn hiking boots hanging over the edge. One wrong move would plunge her down the sheer cliff face to the rock-strewn valley two hundred feet below. A shiver of adrenaline thrilled from the bottom of her feet to the base of her neck. She threw out her arms and inhaled the pine-spiked autumn air. It was late September, and the higher elevations of the Rockies were a motley mix of yellow, orange, and dusty green. Snow capped the high peaks in the distance. Not far off, a stream laughed in its rocky bed.

Freedom.

Kai blinked, and the sun disappeared.

“What ... ?”

The wind whipped as something passed overhead, huge and dark. Fear and the sudden feeling that something was wrong overwhelmed her. She teetered forward, and her foot slipped. The rocks and trees two hundred feet down suddenly looked too close.

“No!” Kai twisted and managed to fall backward onto solid ground, scraping her palms on the pebbles that littered the hard dirt. She scrambled away from the drop, collapsed on her back several feet from the edge, and threw an arm over her eyes, breathing hard.

“Kai! What the hell? Are you okay?”

Kai winced and pulled her arm away from her face, squinting against the brightness of the sky at the looming silhouette of Juliet King, her best friend since preschool and roommate since college.

“You just gave me a heart attack!”
