“They deserved it.”
It was then that Romero knew he was dealing with a madman.
Oh, there had been signs. Plenty of signs. Who else but a madman could survive days in his dungeons without breaking? He was barely more than a boy, but he’d outlasted every other prisoner Romero had ever put under the knife.
The boy looked up at Romero with dark eyes that burned beneath his matted hair. “They deserved it,” he said again. “An’ so will you.”
And then his head sank back onto his chest, breaking the spell of his burning eyes. Romero stepped back. His heart raced as if he’d just outrun death itself. He struggled to keep his voice smooth.
“You confess, then? To the assassination of—”
“Assassination,” the boy cut across him with a scoff.
It galled Romero to allow a peasant to interrupt him— but he bit his tongue. He wanted to see where this would lead.
“Na’ an assassination,” the boy continued. His voice rasped like a rusted hinge beneath his Courman brogue. If not for the faint scar Romero had noticed on his throat, he might have thought the boy was doing it on purpose, trying to intimidate him. Intentional or not, the effect was unsettling. “They weren’t important ’nuff fer that. I slaugh’ered ’em like th’ pigs they was.”
“And I was next.”
The boy made a funny rasping sound. It took Romero a moment to realize that he was laughing.
