Cimree’s legs ached from the long walk to the river. When she’d tried grafting with a crane in order to fly there, the bird had resisted the magic of her distaff and flown away. A lapwing had proven to be more amenable, but the magic had worn off before she’d made it half the distance, and it seemed as if all the other birds had rushed away to get out of her sight. There were dozens of varieties of serpents in this rocky land, however, and she could sense each one and its uniqueness. Her affinity for snakes didn’t help her walk any faster, though.

Since the refugees from Clairvaux had left that beautiful valley, they’d crossed several mountain ranges, wandered additional wide valleys, passed a number of solitary mountains, and even threaded through a narrow neck of land with huge seas on either side. They’d walked, they’d sometimes flown, and at one point they had hunkered down for the winter at a distant outpost of the Long Patrol that had been uninhabited when they got there.

Their destination was the Tirich Mir, a series of mountains that Azra had traveled to in the past. A place where, he believed, they would find refuge from the beasts and monsters that had inspired them to leave their precious Clairvaux. The network of mountains and caves that made up the Tirich Mir was impossibly far away. Along the arduous journey, they were all learning to survive off the land, to hunt and fish and forage.
